Happiness Can Be Felt In the Body
Happiness Can Be Felt In the BodyI was listening to Good Morning America last week and when a doctor came on discussing how Botox is helping depression patients, I ran to the TV. Not because I would ever use Botox, but I knew immediately the implications of what he was going to discuss.

He went on to explain that in his work with several patients who suffered with depression, their symptoms improved significantly (all but one had their depression disappear) and the affect lasted for approximately 4 months. Follow0up Botox injections kept the depression at bay. He discussed the chemical reaction that occurs in the body when we smile and when we frown. Basically, when they couldn't frown, the bad chemical affect cound not be set in motion. What was amazing to me was that he found this new and exciting information.

For years, in my workshops, I have had my participants do a process that allows them to notice that emotions are felt in the body, and that they can be controlled.

Try this at home: First, stoop your shoulders and frown and be quiet within yourself so you can notice how it feels. Then pull your shoulders straight and smile with your entire face, not just your lips. If you were willing to really do it you, even if you felt silly, you were able to feel a noticable difference in your body.

By developing the habit of smiling you will be able to create a greater sense of happiness within you. If you choose not to do whatever it takes to develop a new habit of smiling more often, you should ask yourself why you would rather stay unhappy, sad, or depressed. Something to think about.
